The Spiral Staircase band was an American band. They came from Sacramento, California, and were a popular group in 1960s.The group evolved from a four-piece instrumental group called the Fydallions, which formed in 1964 in Sacramento, California, for an Air Forcetalent contest, but the band was renamed after the movie The Spiral Staircase, but with a deliberate misspelling.
The group forms with horns and lead singer/guitarist Pat Uptons as voice, Harvey Kaye in organ, Dick Lopes as saxophone, Bobby Raymond as bass guitar and Vinny Parello in drums. The Spiral Staircase band was best known as a one-hit wonder for their 1969 single More Today Than Yesterday.
At the time they achieved U.S. #12. This single was released in January 1969, and followed by Shes Ready. In Cash Box, single More Today Than Yesterday reached #7, but sold over one million copies. It was awarded a gold disc. Another single that did well was a song called Baby What I Mean that published in the 1968 period. It, along with the two hits mentioned above, are on the CD The Very Best Of The Spiral Starecase, but of course the most well known is More Today Than Yesterday. About 18 months after the singles release, only after releasing one album and a couple more singles, the group disbanded due to poor management and squabbles over finances.
After disband, The Spiral Staircase band member are separated. Parello is retired in Southern California. Nelsons died on December 31st, 1985 in a plane crash later that same night after his performed with Ricky Nelson in Guntersville. Kaye who died on August 17th, 2008, headed a management company in Las Vegas with his wife Candy. Raymond died in 1984, and Lopes is part owner of a hair-styling salon in Sacramento, called 663 Arden Salon.
