When planning the layout of your kitchen, you may wish to consider a kitchen design with island depending on the amount of space you have. Even small areas can benefit from this design feature as you can include additional appliances to maximise the workspace for example an oven or a sink. You have the added benefit of extra storage as well which you can take advantage of. In my opinion, it is not advisable to have a hob cooker fitted within the island as you will need to have an extractor fan on top.
A lot of thought and preparation will be needed when designing the kitchen and you may wish to consider a designer if your budget allows. You will obviously have to make sure that the island fits in well within your existing kitchen layout, for example you don’t want to be washing vegetables on one side of the kitchen and then walk around the kitchen island to the other side to access the oven. You need to make sure that all items needed for food preparation and cooking are within easy reach of each other. On the other hand, you need to allow for space to open doors for example from dishwashers and ovens.
If you already have a fitted kitchen, then it makes sense to include worktops and units that match with your existing ones if they are available. In some cases, you may need to remodel your kitchen as you may require additional plumbing work or electrical re-wiring. Also consider lighting features that you can include like low hanging chandelier type lighting which can really add splendour to the room.
When making these decisions on whether to add a kitchen island or not, you not only have to consider how the island will fit into your kitchen but how it will fit in your lifestyle. You don’t want the island to be a place for all the clutter such as grocery shopping , handbags, toys, etc. They are a perfect way for the family to get together and enjoy quality time together but it requires a lot of care and maintenance to ensure it doesn’t fall into neglect.
You will often find in most cases that it will be the focal point of your kitchen so whether you go for a contemporary look or a traditional antique style, with the right planning and preparation, you will have a beautiful kitchen island that you can be proud of.
